  • ·        In 2008, the UN (United Nations) had designated 8th June as World Oceans Day.
  • ·        Theme 2020: “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean”

Indian Ocean Commission (IOC)

  • ·     An Intergovernmental organization created in 1982.
  • ·     Institutionalized in 1984 by the Victoria  Agreement in Seychelles
  • ·     The IOC is composed of five African Indian Ocean nations: Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion (an overseas region of France), and Seychelles. 
  • ·     Secretariat is located in Mauritius
  • ·     Four observers — China, EU, Malta, and International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

  • ·        Secretary-General : Nomvuyo Nokwe
  • ·        Member Countries: 22
